Audi Revives the A2 Nameplate for a Lightweight, Ultra-Efficient Entry-Level EV

Audi is officially bringing back the iconic A2 as an affordable, entry-level electric vehicle. Electrek reports that ahead of its official debut this fall, prototypes of the new EV were spotted with minimal camouflage, alongside new details confirming a maximum driving range of over 400 miles.

According to Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, who confirmed in March that the A2 would return as an all-electric model, the new entry-level EV will make “entry into the Audi world easier and more relevant than ever.” Audi also noted that the A2 e-tron is meant to “rejuvenate” the brand. The automaker claims it currently boasts the youngest portfolio among its rivals after launching over 20 new models in the past two years.

Modern Crossover Design Meets Aerodynamic Roots

Launched over 25 years ago, the original Audi A2 1.2 TDI earned fame as the “world’s first four-door three-liter car,” achieving a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. Audi sold over 175,000 A2 units between 2000 and 2005 before ending production after five years due to lower-than-expected sales.

The new electric version carries on that legacy through an efficient, lightweight design. An exclusive spy video published by Pro-Street.dk captured two A2 e-tron prototypes testing in Copenhagen with minimal disguise, providing a closer look at the vehicle's final shape. While taking inspiration from the original egg-shaped MPV, the new EV features a modern crossover hatchback design. It incorporates a closed-off grille, slim LED headlights, and retains an aerodynamic profile to maximize overall efficiency and driving range.

Powertrains, Battery Options, and Pricing

When the A2 e-tron goes on sale this fall, it will be offered with four distinct power outputs: 125 kW, 140 kW, 170 kW, and 240 kW. Electrek reports that similar to the new Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, the entry-level Audi EV is expected to offer three battery pack choices: 50 kWh, 58 kWh, and 79 kWh.

Despite sharing battery expectations with the ID.3 Neo, the A2 e-tron delivers slightly more range, maxing out at an impressive 403 miles (649 km) on the WLTP cycle.

Audi revealed that prices for the A2 e-tron will start at €38,200 (approximately $44,000) in Germany, establishing it as the brand's most affordable electric car. By comparison, the Audi Q4 e-tron starts at €47,500 (around $54,000)—nearly €10,000 more than the incoming electric A2.
