Kia Sales Surge in Q2 2026 Powered by New PV5 Electric Van and Low-Cost EVs
Kia recorded an 88% surge in second-quarter pure EV sales, driven by strong demand for its PV5 electric van and a growing lineup of affordable electric vehicles.

Kia’s strategic bet on electrified vehicles is delivering significant results. According to a report by Electrek, the Korean automaker sold 110,000 pure electric vehicles in the second quarter of 2026, marking an 88% increase compared to the same period last year. Following spikes in gas and oil prices earlier in the year, Kia zeroed in on specific regions by introducing new electric and hybrid models tailored to market demand.
European and Domestic Electric Growth
Electrek reports that Kia's growth in South Korea and Europe was heavily driven by strong demand for its first electric van, the PV5, along with new mass-market EVs such as the EV2, EV4, and EV5.
In its domestic South Korean market, Kia sold 38,000 EVs during Q2—a 123.4% jump compared to Q2 2025. Electric vehicles made up 24.5% of Kia’s total domestic sales in the quarter. Meanwhile, in Western Europe, pure electric vehicle sales reached 52,000 units, representing a 101.5% increase year-over-year.
To build on this momentum, Kia plans to maximize the price competitiveness of its EV2 and EV4 models as local production ramps up in Europe. Electrek notes that the EV2 Long Range variant went on sale earlier this month in Germany, offering a WLTP driving range of up to 281 miles with a starting price of €33,490 ($38,300).
Expanding Commercial and Passenger EV Lineups
Kia’s light commercial vehicle push continues to revolve around the PV5 electric van in Europe, the UK, and other global markets. The automaker is rolling out several new PV5 variants, including a 7-seater (2-2-3 configuration), a luxury Prime model, and the PV5 Cargo High Roof.
Looking further ahead, Kia plans to expand its PBV (Platform Beyond Vehicle) lineup next year with the larger PV7, followed by the launch of the PV9 by 2030.
Hybrid Demands and US Market Outlook
Beyond pure electric vehicles, Kia experienced a 61% year-on-year surge in global hybrid (HEV) sales, reaching 178,000 units. Electrek highlighted that this hybrid momentum was especially clear in the United States, where Kia sold 66,000 HEVs in Q2—a 151% increase from the prior year. Hybrids accounted for 29.6% of Kia’s total US sales, supported by new models like the Telluride and Seltos Hybrids.
US buyers can expect additional electrified options soon. Kia plans to launch the all-electric EV3 SUV in the US by the end of 2026. Additionally, deliveries will begin for the new Sportage Hybrid, which will be Kia's first vehicle manufactured at Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant America alongside the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9.
Second-Half Expectations
Backed by upcoming vehicle launches in key regions, Kia expects to deliver a solid performance during the second half of 2026, meet its annual guidance, and sell more total vehicles than it did during the same period last year.
