2027 Mercedes-Benz C-Class EV First Look: The Compact Luxury Sedan Goes Electric

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has long delivered compact luxury wrapped in a traditional sedan body style, but Car and Driver reports that the nameplate is officially going electric for the 2027 model year. As an entirely new entry in the brand's EV lineup, the 2027 C-Class EV breaks away from the styling of its gas-powered counterpart, adopting Mercedes-Benz’s newest design language with a prominent front maw and distinct rear-end treatment.

Dual-Motor Performance and Engineering

Underneath the sheet metal, the C400 4Matic utilizes two electric motors—one mounted at the front axle and one at the rear—to generate a combined 482 horsepower. All-wheel drive comes standard on this configuration. However, to optimize energy use, the rear-axle motor operates full-time, while the front motor only engages when additional power or traction is needed. During low-load scenarios, such as cruising at constant highway speeds, the front motor automatically decouples to boost overall efficiency.

Mercedes claims the electric C-Class can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, which Car and Driver notes makes it slightly quicker than the base BMW i4 xDrive40 and Audi A6 e-tron. Furthermore, Mercedes dubbed the new model the "sportiest C-Class ever." The chassis, steering, and suspension have been specifically tuned to balance dynamic driving capabilities with ride comfort reminiscent of the larger S-Class. Buyers can also equip the vehicle with an optional air suspension and rear-wheel steering to further enhance handling and stability.

Battery, Charging, and Range Estimates

Built on a new 800-volt architecture, the C-Class EV houses a 94-kWh battery pack. At an 800-volt DC fast-charging station, the C400 4Matic can handle peak charging capacities up to 330 kW. According to Mercedes estimates, this charging speed enables the sedan to recover up to 202 miles of range in roughly 10 minutes. Based on European WLTP test cycle figures, Car and Driver projects the vehicle could earn an EPA range rating of around 400 miles, though initial Car and Driver estimates suggest a real-world driving range of around 350 miles.

For added convenience, every C-Class EV includes an integrated DC converter, allowing drivers to recharge at 400-volt Tesla Supercharger stations.

A Tech-Focused, Luxurious Cabin

Inside, the C-Class EV retains standard Mercedes luxury with nappa leather upholstery and interior trim choices that include gray or brown open-pore birch wood, as well as a white open-pore natural fiber look.

The highlight of the dashboard is a continuous glass panel that houses three distinct digital interfaces: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a central 17.7-inch touchscreen, and an additional 12.3-inch display dedicated to the front passenger. The infotainment setup responds to touch, voice commands, and steering-wheel inputs, and it supports streaming apps like YouTube and Disney+ when the vehicle is parked. Benz also offers two distinct head-up displays, including a premium option equipped with augmented-reality overlays.

In the second row, Mercedes credits a longer wheelbase for offering slightly more headroom compared to the gas-powered C-Class. An optional panoramic sunroof features 162 tiny, illuminated stars integrated directly into the glass panel. Cargo space also sees an upgrade: Mercedes lists trunk capacity at 16.6 cubic feet, providing 5 additional cubic feet of storage compared to the internal-combustion sedan.
