2027 Toyota RAV4 Preview: Efficiency, Power, and Tech Carry Over

As one of Toyota’s top-selling vehicles and a perennial favorite in the United States, the RAV4 compact crossover continues to hold a dominant position in the market. Following a full redesign for the 2026 model year that dropped the nonhybrid powertrain entirely, Car and Driver expects no significant changes for the 2027 Toyota RAV4 lineup.

Hybrid and Plug-In Powertrains

The 2027 RAV4 lineup relies strictly on gas-electric setups across its 10 available trims. The standard RAV4 Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce 226 horsepower in its standard front-wheel-drive configuration. Opting for all-wheel drive adds a third electric motor to power the rear axle, boosting total output to 236 horsepower.

For buyers seeking additional performance, the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) delivers a combined 324 horsepower and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Toyota claims the PHEV offers an electric driving range of up to 52 miles on a full charge. In Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway range testing, a PHEV Woodland trim covered 38 miles strictly on electric power. Toyota states that the PHEV battery can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes when connected to a DC fast charger; however, DC fast-charging capability is limited to the XSE PHEV and Woodland PHEV trims, leaving the SE PHEV and GR Sport PHEV to rely on standard charging setups.

Driving Dynamics and Performance

Car and Driver reports that acceleration in the standard RAV4 Hybrid is smooth and responsive, though the gasoline engine exhibits noticeable noise under load. In instrumented testing by Car and Driver, a 2026 RAV4 Limited AWD recorded a 0-to-60-mph time of 7.1 seconds, matching the publication's test result for the Honda CR-V Hybrid and outperforming both the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid (7.6 seconds) and Subaru Forester Hybrid (8.6 seconds).

The higher-output RAV4 PHEV is significantly quicker, with Car and Driver registering a 5.2-second 0-to-60-mph time in the Woodland trim. For driver-focused enthusiasts, the GR Sport trim adds a suspension tuned by Toyota Gazoo Racing, summer tires, and a reworked power steering system for tighter body control.

Real-World Towing and Fuel Economy

Towing capacity varies depending on the chosen trim and drivetrain. Standard front-wheel-drive models and the all-wheel-drive LE trim are rated to tow up to 1,750 pounds, while all other RAV4 configurations boast a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

According to EPA estimates, front-wheel-drive RAV4 Hybrids achieve up to 47 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 43 mpg combined. All-wheel-drive variants achieve up to 46 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 42 mpg combined, whereas the rugged Woodland trim is rated lower at 41 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 38 mpg combined. In Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway fuel economy evaluation, the RAV4 Hybrid Limited AWD achieved 36 mpg, while the PHEV Woodland recorded 35 mpg.

Interior Space, Technology, and Warranty

Inside, the RAV4 features a blocky dashboard design, ample center console storage, and an available low-profile toggle shifter. Interior upholstery ranges from standard cloth or faux leather to faux suede with red stitching on XSE and GR Sport trims. Rear-seat legroom accommodates adults comfortably, and Car and Driver fit 10 carry-on suitcases behind the second row, expanding to 24 suitcases with the rear seats folded down.

A 10.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard, with a larger 12.9-inch screen available on select trims. The system supports dual-device Bluetooth connections along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
