Chevrolet Already Planning Next-Generation Equinox EV, Report Says

Chevrolet is navigating a complex year for its affordable electric vehicle lineup. While the returned Chevy Bolt recently won Car and Driver’s annual EV of the Year test, sales for the Chevrolet Equinox EV have experienced a drastic decline after leading the brand's electric vehicle push last year. However, according to a recent report from GM Authority, General Motors remains undeterred by the temporary sales dip and is already actively preparing a second-generation Equinox EV.

A New Platform on the Horizon

GM Authority reports that the next-generation Equinox EV is slated to break cover in late 2028 or early 2029, eventually arriving on dealership lots for the 2029 model year. Although specific details regarding the second-generation electric crossover remain unconfirmed, the publication posits that the future model will transition to GM’s planned BEV-N architecture.

This shift would replace the current platform, as the first-generation Equinox EV utilizes GM’s BEV3 platform. The BEV3 architecture presently underpins a wide variety of General Motors electric vehicles, including the Chevy Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Optiq, Cadillac Vistiq, and the ultra-luxury Cadillac Celestiq. Because the original Equinox EV only recently launched for the 2024 model year, moving to a brand-new platform by 2029 would make for a relatively short production run for the first-generation vehicle.

Sales Trends and Competitive Landscape

News of a second-generation model comes amidst fluctuating sales performance for the compact electric SUV. After steadily ramping up production during the second half of 2024, Chevrolet delivered an impressive 57,945 Equinox EV crossovers in 2025. That performance crowned it the bestselling EV of 2025 from any automaker other than Tesla, which maintained its lead at the top of the sales charts with the Model 3 and Model Y.

However, Chevrolet is currently far off pace to match those figures in 2026. Through the first half of this year, Chevy has sold 16,249 Equinox EV units. This decrease drops the vehicle to fifth place among the bestselling EVs of 2026, positioning it behind competitors such as the Toyota bZ and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

When asked to address the details outlined in the GM Authority report, a spokesperson for Chevrolet declined to comment on the record to Car and Driver, stating, "We cannot comment on future product plans."
