Ford Pairs $30K Electric Truck Platform with Apple Maps Navigation

As Android Automotive OS and Google Maps secure territory across various carmakers, Apple is fighting back with its new MapKit for Automotive SDK. Designed to deliver navigation directly to vehicle displays, Apple's automotive software has scored its first major dashboard integration with Ford's upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle Platform.

The new technology will be integrated into the architecture underpinning Ford's highly anticipated $30,000 compact electric pickup, alongside a range of other affordable EVs. Beyond standard navigation duties on the dashboard, Ford will utilize road-level information provided by Apple Maps to assist in developing its next-generation BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving system. According to the automaker, leveraging this data will yield a more seamless hands-free driving experience.

While Ford and Apple did not release photos or extensive details, they confirmed that drivers can expect natural language turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates, and incident reports. The system will also include an intuitive search function with detailed place cards, alongside multiple routing options designed to assist drivers in finding the best path to their destination.

Routing options will inherently account for electric vehicle needs. Apple Maps natively monitors battery levels and factors in elevation changes to locate appropriate charging stops along a route. The software can display real-time charging station availability and guide drivers to compatible chargers when battery reserves drop extremely low. Additionally, Ford confirmed that the new system integration includes a battery preconditioning feature, which prepares the vehicle's battery for optimal charging speeds as the driver navigates toward a charging location.

"Our new midsize electric vehicle will be priced around $30,000 and redefines what advanced technology can be – simple, useful, and truly attainable for more customers," stated Ford CEO Jim Farley. "We’re proud to embed Apple Maps’ navigation and mapping technology directly into our Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, giving customers the ultimate navigation experience alongside our Ford app, a full suite of software, and next-generation BlueCruise, all enabled by a new zonal architecture."

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services and Health, noted the significance of the partnership. "With our new MapKit for Automotive SDK, we’re bringing Maps further into drivers’ daily lives, giving them an incredibly accurate and easy-to-use navigation system that is seamlessly integrated into Ford vehicles."
