GM's Midgate Pro Proves to Be a Standout Feature for EV Trucks

During a seven-day, hundred-plus-mile test drive of the 2026 GMC Sierra EV Denali Max Range, automotive journalist Andrew P. Collins evaluated the electric truck's overall pros and cons for The Drive. While the truck's performance and luxury left a strong impression, the standout feature of the vehicle had nothing to do with its electric powertrain. Instead, it was the MidGate Pro—the fully removable back wall of the cab.

Available on both the GMC Sierra EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the Midgate system allows the rear glass and the back wall of the cab to tuck away. This design lets drivers extend the truck bed directly into the cabin to transport exceptionally long cargo, or simply open up the space to enjoy a breeze through a partially open cockpit.

GM previously offered a similar feature on older internal combustion models, specifically the Chevrolet Avalanche and the Cadillac Escalade EXT. However, electric trucks are uniquely well-suited for this functionality. Because EV trucks utilize a single contiguous body where the cab and bed are joined—unlike traditional body-on-frame trucks that keep them separate—the structural integration is seamless. Furthermore, because electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, drivers do not have to worry about carbon monoxide leaking into the cockpit when the cabin is open to the bed.

While specific tape-measure bed length figures and step-by-step mechanical details remain subject to hands-on demonstration, the core design represents a practical evolution for modern electric pickups. By leveraging the unique structural and zero-emission advantages of an EV platform, GM's execution of the MidGate Pro delivers a compelling functional reason for truck buyers to consider making the switch to an electric pickup.
