Mercedes Teases New GLA Ahead of July 29 Reveal as Spy Shots Uncover Sleek Electric Profile

Mercedes-Benz has officially set a date for the full unveiling of its next-generation GLA. According to Carscoops, the German automaker has confirmed the small crossover will break cover on July 29, releasing a teaser image of the sheet-draped vehicle to mark the occasion. While the full debut is just around the corner, fresh spy shots have already given automotive enthusiasts a much clearer look at the vehicle's updated shape ahead of schedule.

The upcoming GLA lineup follows the same multi-fuel strategy as the new GLB. Internal combustion engine (ICE) versions will retain the classic GLA name, while the all-electric variant—named the GLA Electric—will step in to replace the outgoing EQA model.

Sleeker Styling and Aerodynamic Profile

Unlike heavily camouflaged prototypes spotted earlier this year, the latest testing vehicle leaves its doors, glasshouse, and body surfacing largely exposed. Carscoops reports that the result is a cleaner, more sophisticated design that appears noticeably more aerodynamic than the current GLA. Rather than adopting an upright, boxy SUV stance—a role reserved for the new GLB currently on sale—the GLA Electric features a gently sloping roofline and a rising window line that creates a sleek crossover silhouette.

Key styling features confirmed by the newly exposed profile include flush-mounted door handles designed to reduce drag. Although the front and rear ends remain hidden beneath disguise, Mercedes has already indicated its design direction. The front is expected to feature a scaled-down version of the retro-futuristic grille treatment seen on the larger GLC EQ. Around back, close inspection reveals hints of Mercedes' signature star-shaped lighting graphics, with illuminated three-pointed stars anticipated at both ends of the production crossover.

Tech-Focused Cabin and MMA Architecture

While the latest spy photographs do not reveal new interior details, earlier spy shots indicate that the GLA EQ will align closely with its compact siblings, the CLA and GLB. The crossover is expected to offer an optional MBUX Superscreen setup, which combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with dual 14-inch displays stretching across the dashboard.

Underneath the sheet metal, the new GLA shares its platform and powertrain options with other compact Mercedes models. The lineup is expected to feature:

• Rear-wheel drive entry model: Producing 268 hp (272 PS / 200 kW).
• All-wheel drive variant: Delivering 349 hp (354 PS / 260 kW).
• Battery and charging: An 85 kWh battery paired with an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of ultra-fast charging.

Performance enthusiasts can also look forward to a high-output variant. Spy photographers have already caught an electric AMG version testing. Carscoops notes that if the AMG crossover borrows its hardware from the upcoming AMG CLA, it could eventually produce as much as 671 hp (680 PS / 500 kW).

Release Timeline

For buyers not ready to make the switch to a fully electric powertrain, Mercedes will offer traditional options alongside the EV lineup. The GLA Electric is scheduled to arrive first this fall. Combustion-powered versions of the new GLA, equipped with 1.5-liter hybrid engines, will follow later, arriving in spring 2027.
